About Us
Given the increasing competitiveness of medical school applications and reflecting on the struggles they endured in their medical school application processes, the co-founders of AM Med Coaches sought to help talented, under-resourced pre-medical college students (BIPOC, first generation, LGBTQIA+, low income) reach their dreams of attending medical school.

We understand that there are additional challenges in coming from a lower socioeconomic background, being historically underrepresented in medicine, and being LGBTQIA+. These barriers may make it difficult to pursue a career in medicine and research and may have lasting effects on the rest of their educational opportunities in the future.
AM Med Coaches is a free, volunteer-based coaching initiative through which pre-medical students can communicate with and learn from experienced medical school coaches who also come from marginalized backgrounds. We work directly with our sister organization, AM Med Mentors, which provides 1:1 mentorship between medical students and undergraduates. Nevertheless, we recognize that students need an exceptional team of mentors and coaches in order to help them successfully reach the next stage of their professional career. Therefore, we provide additional specialized coaching in three crucial areas: academic classes, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) , and medical school applications. In doing so, we aim to assist the next generation of compassionate and empathetic medical students learn indelible skills that will help them to reach their dreams.

Who Are our mentors?
We aim to provide world-class mentorship to our students. Our organization is very fortunate to recruit amazing physician-scientist trainees, medical students, and resident physicians to help coach the next generation of medical leaders.
With our vast experience, we want to impact the next generation of scholars and give a helping hand to those who are under-resourced. Sometimes, life provides obstacles that prevent people from achieving their potential. We’re here to change that.

Does your coaching have any costs?Zero. In addition, we do not accept funding: we are a group of coaches dedicated to the goal of helping students from vulnerable backgrounds (under-resourced, Person of Color, LGBTQIA+, etc.). Our work is entirely run by volunteers.

Is there a GPA requirement for mentees?No, we understand that our mentees may have unique circumstances that prevent them from achieving a high GPA or exam score. We have worked with mentees who had to work long hours during college and take multiple gap years in order to help out the family. Others have had to take care of ill relatives. We do believe that every mentee has the capability to achieve their full potential, and that mentorship can greatly benefit our students. Therefore, we take a holistic approach when bringing aboard a new mentee, and we do our very best to find top notch mentors who also have similar interests.

I really want to be connected with a coach who goes to my dream medical school. Can I be matched with them?We will try our best to match you to your preferences. However, we want to provide high-quality mentorship; therefore, we prioritize the coach's past experiences, accomplishments, and obstacles that they have overcome over the name or ranking of their institution. Overall, we do want our students to attend amazing medical schools, but we also want them to do very well in pre-med journey and beyond.

How do you recruit your coaches?Our organization works very hard to identify and invite amazing individuals who have great potential in becoming a coach. Our med school coaches are chosen based on their high caliber, dedication to their community, and previous mentoring experiences.

My coach and I just don’t click. What's next?To ensure coaching relationships are going smoothly, we also have managers dedicated to resolving any issues or concerns. If intervention of our manager and executive board doesn’t work, then we can assign different coaches and students -- if possible.

What is the time commitment?Ultimately, we want to build mentorship relationships, organically. Therefore, mentorship meetings are based on the mentor's and your mentee’s schedules.
